What Is the Papilloma Virus Model Used For?

Papillomaviruses are small, non-enveloped viruses with a circular double-stranded DNA genome inside an icosahedral capsid. They reach the basal cells of the epithelium through tiny breaks in the skin or mucosa. Their life cycle follows the maturing epithelium: in the dividing basal layer the viral genome is kept at a low copy number; as infected cells move upwards and differentiate, the genome is copied many times and capsid proteins are made; and new particles are released in the dead cells shed from the surface, without the cell being burst open. Little virus is made in the lower layers, so the infection can hide from the immune system for a long time.

Low-risk types cause common, plantar and genital warts. High-risk types, if infection persists, make viral proteins that disable the cell’s tumour-suppressor proteins, and over many years this can lead to cancer of the cervix and some other sites. Most infections are cleared by the immune system, and vaccination before exposure together with cervical screening are the main public-health measures. The model is a teaching aid and gives no medical advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the papilloma virus model show?
The life cycle of the papilloma virus, as its title states. The parts, labels, size and material are not listed, so ask JLab for a description and photo before ordering.

Why is the life cycle linked to skin maturation?
The virus can complete its cycle only in differentiating epithelial cells, so new particles are made in the upper layers and shed with the surface cells.

Can it be used in cancer-biology lessons?
Yes; the topic links a viral infection with cervical and other cancers. The Biochemical Characteristics of Cancer Model, linked below, covers how cancer cells differ from normal cells.

What are the minimum order and dispatch time?
The minimum order is 10 units, each sold individually. Every model is visually inspected and usually dispatched within 7–10 working days, before export transit.
