What Is the Liver Fluke Life Cycle Model Used For?
Fasciola is one of the flatworms (phylum Platyhelminthes) named in class 11 biology, and its life cycle is the standard example of a digenean fluke with larval stages in a snail. The adults are hermaphrodites living in the bile ducts of sheep and cattle. Their large, operculated eggs pass with the bile into the faeces; in water each egg hatches into a ciliated miracidium, which must soon find a suitable lymnaeid snail.
Inside the snail it multiplies through sporocyst and redia stages to produce tailed cercariae. These leave the snail, swim to water plants or grass and encyst as metacercariae. Sheep, cattle or people swallow the cysts while grazing or with raw watercress; the young flukes excyst in the intestine, cross the gut wall and the liver capsule, burrow through the liver and settle in the bile ducts. Heavy infection damages the liver — “liver rot” — and causes serious losses in livestock.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which stages does the model show?
The listing does not describe the stages, labels or size, so request a description and photo from JLab before ordering.
How does the liver fluke differ from Schistosoma?
Fasciola is a hermaphrodite that lives in the bile ducts and is caught by eating cysts on plants. Schistosoma has separate sexes, lives in blood vessels and enters through the skin as cercariae.
Who manufactures this model?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a zoology and biology teaching-model manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The model is made in its own works, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy direct from the maker and repeat orders come from the same source. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Liberia in West Africa, Argentina in South America, Slovakia in Eastern Europe, the Maldives in South Asia and Algeria in North Africa.
