What Is the Cirrhosis Liver Model Used For?
In cirrhosis, repeated injury makes the liver lay down bands of scar tissue, and the surviving cells regrow as nodules between them, so a healthy, smooth liver becomes firm, shrunken and knobbly. The commonest causes are long-term heavy drinking, chronic hepatitis B or C infection and fatty liver disease. As the scarring spreads, the liver can no longer clear bilirubin, make clotting proteins or let blood pass freely, leading to jaundice, fluid in the abdomen, easy bleeding, swollen veins in the gullet and a higher risk of liver cancer.
The NCERT class 12 biology chapter on human health and disease links chronic alcohol use with liver damage, and this model gives that point a visible form. Scarring is usually permanent, but treating the cause can stop it getting worse — a useful message for nursing and public-health students.
