What Is the Shigella Infection Model Used For?
It supports lectures on shigellosis. Shigella are non-motile Gram-negative rods of the family Enterobacteriaceae; the genus has four species — S. dysenteriae, S. flexneri, S. boydii and S. sonnei — and spreads by the faecal–oral route, where very few bacteria are enough to cause illness. In the colon the bacteria cross the lining through M cells over lymphoid follicles, are taken up by macrophages and kill them, then enter the neighbouring epithelial cells from their base. Inside, they multiply and push into adjacent cells using the host cell’s own actin.
Infected cells release signals that draw in neutrophils, and the resulting inflammation destroys patches of epithelium. These ulcers explain the frequent small stools with blood and mucus that define dysentery; some strains of S. dysenteriae also make Shiga toxin, which adds to the damage. The model helps contrast this invasive diarrhoea with the watery, toxin-driven diarrhoea of cholera, and frames hand washing, safe water and sanitation as the main prevention.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the model show about Shigella?
Its subject is the route of infection through the colon wall and the dysentery that follows. The exact parts and labels are not listed here, so ask JLab for a description and photo before you order.
Is it suitable for school biology?
Shigella invasion is college-level content, so the model mainly suits undergraduate microbiology, medical and nursing teaching labs.
Who manufactures this model?
JLab — Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd — at its own works in Ambala, Haryana, and it quotes directly as the maker.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a maker of biology lab equipment and microbiology teaching models in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. This model comes from JLab’s own works rather than a trader, so colleges, dealers and importers order factory-direct and return to the same manufacturer for repeat sets. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Libya in North Africa, Germany in Western Europe, Taiwan in East Asia, the Maldives in South Asia and Gabon in Central Africa.
