What Is the Vibrio and Yersinia Model Used For?
On the Vibrio side, it supports teaching on curved, comma-shaped rods that swim with a single polar flagellum and thrive in salty or brackish water. Vibrio cholerae causes cholera: without invading the gut wall, its toxin makes the cells lining the small intestine pour out salt and water, giving the profuse “rice-water” stools of the disease. Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus are linked with raw or undercooked seafood such as oysters. In the lab, TCBS agar is the classic selective medium, on which V. cholerae forms yellow colonies.
On the Yersinia side, it covers short Gram-negative rods: Yersinia pestis, the cause of plague, spread by rodent fleas; and Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, food- and water-borne gut pathogens that can inflame the lymph nodes of the abdomen and mimic appendicitis. Y. enterocolitica keeps growing at refrigerator temperature, a point often raised in food-safety teaching.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly does the model cover?
The two genera named in its title. Which species, structures and labels it shows are not listed, so ask JLab for a description and photo before ordering.
Does JLab also list a separate plague model?
Yes. The Yersinia Pestis and Species Model and the Epidemiology and Pathogenesis of Plague Model are linked below; ask JLab which one suits your syllabus.
Who manufactures it?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd), at its own works in Ambala, Haryana.
