Product Code : EL-BE-6188
Jlab Export is a leading Escherichia and Salmonella Species Model Manufacturer, and suppliers in India

Escherichia and Salmonella Species Model (code EL-BE-6188) is a microbiology teaching model on two related genera of Gram-negative gut bacteria: Escherichia, whose familiar member is E. coli, and Salmonella, the cause of typhoid and of much food poisoning. It contrasts a usual gut resident with a food- and water-borne pathogen. It is made by Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) at its works in Ambala, India.

What Is the Escherichia and Salmonella Model Used For?

Both genera are motile Gram-negative rods of the Enterobacteriaceae. Escherichia coli lives in the large intestine of healthy people and animals, which is why its presence in water signals faecal contamination. It ferments lactose (pink colonies on MacConkey agar) and is indole-positive. Outside the gut it is the commonest cause of urinary tract infection, while particular strains cause diarrhoea: enterotoxigenic E. coli (travellers’ diarrhoea), enteropathogenic E. coli (infant diarrhoea) and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, which causes bloody diarrhoea and can lead to haemolytic uraemic syndrome. NCERT class 12 biotechnology also meets E. coli as the standard host for recombinant DNA.

Salmonella does not ferment lactose (pale colonies on MacConkey agar), and many strains produce hydrogen sulphide, giving black-centred colonies on selective media. Salmonella Typhi and Paratyphi cause enteric (typhoid) fever: NCERT class 12 describes its spread through contaminated food and water, sustained high fever, weakness, stomach pain, constipation, headache and loss of appetite and the Widal test. Serotypes such as Salmonella Enteritidis and Typhimurium cause food poisoning, often from poultry and eggs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are E. coli and Salmonella told apart in the lab?
E. coli ferments lactose and gives pink colonies on MacConkey agar; Salmonella gives pale colonies and many strains form black, hydrogen-sulphide-positive colonies on selective media.

Which species does the model show?
The listing does not state them. Ask JLab for a description and photo; the model is a teaching aid only, with no diagnostic or treatment guidance.
