What Is the Entamoeba Life Cycle Model Used For?

Amoebiasis is part of the human health and disease chapter in class 12 biology, where houseflies are named as mechanical carriers of the parasite from faeces to food. The cycle needs only one host. A person swallows mature cysts, which are round, have up to four nuclei and survive outside the body. In the lower small intestine each cyst hatches and divides to release eight small trophozoites, which settle in the large intestine and multiply by binary fission.

Trophozoites move by pseudopodia and feed on bacteria and, in invasive infection, on red blood cells. They can invade the colon wall, producing flask-shaped ulcers and dysentery with blood and mucus, and may travel in the portal vein to the liver to form an abscess. In the lumen some trophozoites round up and encyst; cysts passed in formed stool carry the infection on, while trophozoites passed in dysentery die quickly outside the body.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which stages does the model show?
The listing does not describe the stages, labels or size, so ask JLab for a description and photo before ordering.

How is E. histolytica recognised under the microscope?
Trophozoites containing ingested red blood cells point to invasive E. histolytica; cysts are round with up to four nuclei and may show rod-shaped chromatoid bodies. The harmless look-alike E. dispar has identical cysts, so antigen or molecular tests are used to tell them apart.
