What Is the Chlorenchyma Slide Used For?
Chlorenchyma is parenchyma whose thin-walled living cells contain chloroplasts, so it is the main site of photosynthesis. It makes up the mesophyll of leaves (palisade and spongy layers) and is also found in the cortex of young green stems. In the class 9 chapter on tissues and the class 11 anatomy of flowering plants, students identify it next to ordinary parenchyma, collenchyma with its thickened cell corners, and sclerenchyma with its thick lignified walls. Note that stained sections do not always look green, so students should identify chlorenchyma by its cell shape, thin walls and position in the organ.
