What Is the Mansonoides Life Cycle Model Used For?
Like all mosquitoes, Mansonoides passes through complete metamorphosis — egg, larva, pupa and winged adult — but its early stages live in an unusual way. Females lay their eggs in sticky clusters on the underside of floating leaves of water plants such as Pistia, the water lettuce. The larvae and pupae do not rise to the surface to breathe; instead they pierce the air-filled roots and stems of these plants with a saw-toothed breathing siphon or breathing horns and take oxygen from them.
In India these mosquitoes are vectors of Brugia malayi, one of the worms that cause lymphatic filariasis, and the females bite mainly at night. Because the larvae depend on water plants, clearing Pistia and similar weeds from ponds is a standard control measure. The model helps teachers compare this cycle with those of Anopheles, Culex and Aedes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which stages does the model show?
The listing does not name them. Ask JLab for a description and photo of the stages and labels before ordering.
How do Mansonoides larvae differ from other mosquito larvae?
Most mosquito larvae hang from the water surface to breathe. Mansonoides larvae stay attached below the surface, drawing air from plant roots through a modified siphon, which also makes them harder to reach with surface treatments.
Who manufactures this model?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), at its own works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a zoology lab equipment and teaching-model manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. JLab makes the model itself instead of buying it from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers order from the source. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example the USA in North America, Peru in South America, Guatemala in Central America and the Caribbean, Afghanistan in South Asia and Spain in Southern Europe.
