What Does a Head and Neck L.S. Show?
A longitudinal section through the midline of the head and neck opens up, in one view, the brain with its cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem, the spinal cord within the cervical vertebrae, the nasal cavity, the mouth with the tongue and palate, and the pharynx leading down to the larynx, trachea and oesophagus. The view makes one point especially clear: air and food share the pharynx, and the epiglottis closes over the larynx during swallowing so that food passes into the oesophagus rather than the windpipe. That is why the model is a favourite for the breathing and digestion chapters of class 11 biology, and for introducing the brain and spinal cord.
