What Is the Anencephaly Model Used For?

Early in development the embryo’s neural plate folds into the neural tube, which becomes the brain and spinal cord. In anencephaly the head end of this tube fails to close within the first month after conception, so the forebrain, the skull vault and the overlying scalp do not form. The condition is not compatible with survival: affected babies are stillborn or die soon after birth. It is usually detected on a prenatal ultrasound scan, and folic acid taken before conception and in early pregnancy lowers the risk of neural tube defects.

The model helps teachers explain neural tube formation, the difference between anencephaly and spina bifida, and why folic acid is part of antenatal advice. It is a study aid only.

  • Companion models — add the hydrocephalus or fetal development models listed below.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a neural tube defect?
It is a birth defect caused by incomplete closure of the neural tube. Anencephaly affects the head end; spina bifida affects the spine.

How does anencephaly differ from hydrocephalus?
In anencephaly most of the brain and skull vault never form. In hydrocephalus the brain develops, but excess cerebrospinal fluid collects in its ventricles.

Can the risk be reduced?
Yes. Adequate folic acid before and in early pregnancy lowers the risk of neural tube defects, which is why it is part of standard antenatal advice.

Who manufactures the model, and is its size given?
JLab makes it at its works in Ambala, India. Size and material are not listed and are confirmed with the quotation.
