What Is the Protozoan Cyst Model Used For?
A cyst is a resting stage enclosed in a tough wall. Trophozoites round up and encyst as they pass down the bowel; the cysts leave in the faeces, survive in water and moist soil, and infect the next person who swallows them. Because cysts rather than trophozoites are usually seen in formed stool, recognising them is a core skill in stool microscopy. A saline mount shows their shape, and Lugol’s iodine stains the nuclei and any glycogen so that they can be counted and compared.
