What Is the Punctured Wound Chest Model Used For?
A punctured or stab wound is produced when a pointed weapon such as a knife, dagger, screwdriver or spike is pushed in point first, so its depth exceeds its length on the skin. If the weapon enters a body cavity or organ the wound is called penetrating; if it passes right through and leaves an exit wound it is perforating. On the chest the danger lies deeper: the lungs, heart and great vessels can be injured, and blood or air may collect in the chest cavity as a haemothorax or pneumothorax.
Forensic teaching uses the shape of the skin wound to reason about the weapon. A single-edged blade tends to leave one sharp and one blunt end, a double-edged blade two sharp ends, and a round spike a small round or slit-like hole. Skin elasticity and the wound's direction relative to the skin's cleavage (Langer's) lines affect gaping, so its length on the skin is not an exact measure of blade width. Medical colleges and forensic science courses use the model in lectures, viva practice and museum displays.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a stab wound differ from an incised wound?
A stab wound is deeper than it is long because the weapon goes in point first; an incised wound is made by drawing a sharp edge across the skin, so it is longer than it is deep.
