Herpes Simplex Virus Model (code EL-BE-5227) is a teaching model of the herpes simplex virus (HSV), the herpesvirus behind cold sores and genital herpes. Lecturers in microbiology, medicine, dentistry and nursing use it to show the layered build of an enveloped DNA virus and to explain how herpes infections lie dormant and return. It is made by Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) at its works in Ambala, India.

How Is the Herpes Simplex Model Used?
From the centre outwards, a herpes simplex particle has a core of double-stranded DNA, an icosahedral protein capsid, a protein-rich layer called the tegument, and a lipid envelope studded with glycoprotein spikes that attach the virus to host cells. A three-dimensional model lets students follow these layers in order, which is hard to picture from an electron micrograph alone.
There are two types of HSV: one mainly causes cold sores around the mouth, the other mainly causes genital herpes. Both spread by direct contact, and after the first infection the virus hides in nerve cells, where it can reawaken later — the textbook example of viral latency. The model fits virology in B.Sc. and M.Sc. microbiology, medical, dental and nursing courses, and health-education sessions.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — at least 10 models.
- Size, material and parts key — not stated, so ask for them.
- Related models — the cytomegalovirus or herpes replication model below, if you teach the herpesvirus family as a unit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What layers make up a herpes simplex virus?
A DNA core, an icosahedral capsid, the tegument and an outer envelope with glycoprotein spikes. Ask JLab which of these the model labels.
Why do herpes infections come back?
After the first infection the virus stays dormant in nerve cells and can become active again later, which is why cold sores often recur in the same place.
Who manufactures this model?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of teaching models and laboratory equipment for biology and medical education, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The herpes simplex model is made in JLab’s own works, not sourced from traders, so colleges, schools, dealers and importers buy it direct, and every model is visually inspected before dispatch. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Libya in North Africa, Ireland in Western Europe, Trinidad and Tobago in Central America and the Caribbean, Poland in Eastern Europe and Gabon in Central Africa.
