What Is the Cribriform Hymen Model Used For?
Cribriform means sieve-like, from the Latin cribrum, and describes a hymen with multiple small perforations. It belongs to a family of variants that teachers usually show together: the septate hymen, where a band divides the opening into two, and the microperforate hymen, with a single very small opening. A cribriform hymen is often first noticed when a tampon is hard to insert or during a gynaecological examination, and when it causes problems it can be corrected by a minor surgical procedure.
In forensic medicine the same anatomy calls for care. The thin bands between the openings can look like torn tissue or remnants, so an examiner who does not know the variant may misread a normal finding; descriptions should say exactly what is seen. Students are also taught that no form of the hymen shows whether a person has had sexual intercourse. The model is used in obstetrics and gynaecology, forensic medicine, and nursing and midwifery teaching, often beside the injured cribriform model for comparison.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does cribriform mean?
Sieve-like: the hymen has several small openings separated by thin bands of tissue.
Why is the cribriform hymen important in an examination?
Clinically it can make tampon use or examination difficult; forensically its bands can be mistaken for injury if the variant is not recognised.
Who makes the cribriform hymen model?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd), at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of medical, forensic and biology teaching models in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. Each model comes from JLab's own works, not from a trader, so colleges, dealers and importers buy factory-direct, with every unit inspected by eye before dispatch. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Kuwait in the Middle East, Mexico in North America, the Dominican Republic in Central America and the Caribbean, Rwanda in East Africa and Egypt in North Africa.
