What Is the Life Cycle of Hard and Soft Tick Model Used For?
Ticks pass through egg, six-legged larva, eight-legged nymph and adult, and every active stage needs a blood meal. Hard ticks (family Ixodidae) carry a hard shield on the back with mouthparts visible from above; they have a single nymphal stage, feed slowly for several days at each stage, and the female lays one large batch of eggs before dying. Soft ticks (family Argasidae) have a leathery body with the mouthparts underneath; they pass through several nymphal stages, feed quickly and repeatedly, often at night, and hide in nests, burrows and animal shelters.
These differences explain how each group spreads disease: hard ticks transmit Lyme disease, spotted fevers and Kyasanur Forest disease, while soft ticks transmit tick-borne relapsing fever. The model supports arthropod and vector lessons in zoology and veterinary courses.

Hard ticks have a back shield, visible mouthparts and one nymphal stage, and feed slowly. Soft ticks lack the shield, have hidden mouthparts, several nymphal stages and feed quickly, many times.
Which diseases do ticks spread?
Hard ticks carry Lyme disease, spotted fevers, Kyasanur Forest disease and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever; soft ticks carry tick-borne relapsing fever.
