What Is the Scabies Life Cycle Model Used For?

The whole life cycle of the itch mite takes place on a person. A fertilised female tunnels into the outer layer of the skin and lays her eggs along the burrow. The eggs hatch into six-legged larvae that make their way to the skin surface, moult into eight-legged nymphs and then become adults; males and females mate on the skin, and the new females start fresh burrows. Scabies spreads mainly through prolonged close skin-to-skin contact, less often through shared bedding or clothing, and causes intense itching that is often worse at night.

The model lets teachers explain why scabies tends to spread through households, hostels and other crowded settings, and why close contacts are usually dealt with together — diagnosis and treatment remain matters for health professionals. As mites are arachnids, it also works as an example in zoology lessons on arthropod parasites.
