What Is the Taenia Solium Life Cycle Model Used For?
The adult pork tapeworm lives in the human small intestine, attached by a scolex that carries four suckers and a rostellum armed with hooks. Egg-filled proglottids pass out in the faeces, and pigs that eat the eggs become the intermediate host: the larvae hatch, enter the blood and lodge in muscle as cysticerci, known as Cysticercus cellulosae. A person who eats raw or undercooked infected pork develops the adult worm, a condition called taeniasis.
What sets this tapeworm apart is that people can also swallow its eggs, through contaminated food, water or hands. The larvae then form cysts in human tissues — cysticercosis — and cysts in the brain (neurocysticercosis) are an important cause of seizures where the parasite is common. The model helps students see both routes and why cooking pork, latrine use and hand hygiene matter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which stages does the model show?
The listing does not name them. Ask JLab for a description and photo of the stages and labels before ordering.
What is the difference between taeniasis and cysticercosis?
Taeniasis is infection with the adult worm in the gut, caught from undercooked pork. Cysticercosis is infection of the tissues with larval cysts after swallowing the eggs, so people act as an accidental intermediate host.
How does it differ from the Taenia saginata life cycle?
Taenia saginata uses cattle, has no hooks on its scolex and does not cause human cysticercosis; JLab lists its life-cycle model separately.
Who manufactures this model?
JLab — Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd — at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of biology lab equipment and parasitology models, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The model comes from JLab’s own works, not from a trader, so colleges, dealers and importers order from the maker. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Moldova in Eastern Europe, Burkina Faso in West Africa, the USA in North America, South Africa in Southern Africa and Germany in Western Europe.
