What Is the Vitriolage Model Used For?
Vitriolage takes its name from oil of vitriol, the old name for sulphuric acid: a corrosive acid is thrown at someone, usually at the face, to disfigure them. Forensic medicine teaches the acid's signature. Sulphuric acid dehydrates and chars tissue, so the burnt skin turns brown to black, whereas nitric acid stains it yellow and hydrochloric acid leaves it greyish-white. Acid burns are irregular, with trickle and splash marks running downwards from where the liquid struck, and unlike flame burns they do not blister or singe the hair.
The consequences explain why the topic is taught in detail: deep scarring, contractures that limit movement, and eye injury that can end in blindness. Lessons also stress first aid — washing the area at once with plenty of running water for a long time, rather than trying to neutralise the acid on the skin. Medical colleges, nursing schools and forensic science courses use the model in lectures, case discussions and viva practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does vitriolage mean?
The deliberate throwing of a corrosive acid, classically sulphuric acid (oil of vitriol), on another person.
How can an acid burn be told apart from a thermal burn?
Acid burns show a colour typical of the acid — brown to black for sulphuric acid — with downward trickle marks, no blisters and no singed hair.
Who manufactures the model?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd) makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of biology equipment and forensic and anatomy teaching models, incorporated in 2017 and run from Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The model is produced at JLab's own works and not bought in from a trader, so colleges, dealers and importers get it straight from the manufacturer, inspected piece by piece before dispatch. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Botswana in Southern Africa, Germany in Western Europe, DR Congo in Central Africa, Belize in Central America and the Caribbean and Uruguay in South America.
