What Is the Viper Bite Model Used For?
The first question with any snake bite is whether the snake was venomous. A venomous bite usually leaves two fang punctures, sometimes only one, while a non-venomous snake leaves rows of small teeth marks. Viper venom is chiefly haemotoxic (vasculotoxic): the bitten part becomes painful and swells, the swelling spreads, and blisters, bruising and local tissue death can follow. Systemic signs include bleeding from the gums or in the urine, blood that fails to clot and kidney injury. Cobra and krait venom, by contrast, is mainly neurotoxic, causing drooping eyelids and paralysis, often with little local reaction after a krait bite.
In South Asia the Russell's viper and saw-scaled viper are two of the "big four" medically important snakes, with the spectacled cobra and common krait. Lessons with the model also cover first aid: reassure the person, keep them still, immobilise the bitten limb and get them to hospital, where antivenom is given if needed — and avoid cutting, sucking or tight tourniquets. Medical colleges use it in forensic medicine, toxicology and community medicine teaching, alongside nursing and first-aid courses.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a venomous bite look different from a non-venomous one?
Venomous snakes usually leave one or two fang punctures; non-venomous snakes leave an arc of small teeth marks.
What kind of venom do vipers have?
Mainly haemotoxic venom, which damages blood vessels and clotting, causing local swelling and blistering and, in severe cases, bleeding and kidney injury.
Who makes the snake bite model?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) manufactures it at its Ambala works in Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a biology lab equipment and teaching model manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and sited on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. Since the model is made in JLab's own works and not bought from a trader, institutions, dealers and importers order factory-direct, and each unit is looked over before it is packed. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Botswana in Southern Africa, Iraq in the Middle East, Nigeria in West Africa, Uganda in East Africa and the Czech Republic in Eastern Europe.
