What Is the Hypersensitivity Reaction Model Used For?

It walks through the four classic reaction types of Gell and Coombs. Type I, the immediate or allergic reaction, follows when IgE antibodies on mast cells meet an allergen and the cells release histamine and other mediators, as in hay fever, allergic asthma and anaphylaxis. Type II involves antibodies against antigens on cell surfaces, seen in mismatched blood transfusion and haemolytic disease of the newborn. Type III arises when antigen–antibody complexes lodge in vessel walls or tissues and trigger complement and inflammation, as in serum sickness. Type IV, the delayed type, is driven by T cells rather than antibodies and appears a day or more after contact, as in contact dermatitis and the tuberculin skin test.

Class 12 covers type I as allergy, with mast cells releasing histamine and serotonin; college courses add the other types. The model is a teaching aid only, not an allergy test.
