What Is the Streptococcus Model Used For?

Streptococci are sorted first by what they do to blood agar — beta-haemolytic species clear the red cells completely, alpha-haemolytic species leave a greenish zone, and gamma strains cause no change — and then by Lancefield group, based on a carbohydrate in the cell wall. A model of the genus lets students connect each group with its diseases:

  • Streptococcus pyogenes (group A, beta) — sore throat, scarlet fever, impetigo, cellulitis and necrotising fasciitis, followed in some patients by rheumatic fever, which can damage heart valves, or acute glomerulonephritis.
  • Streptococcus agalactiae (group B) — a classic cause of sepsis and meningitis in newborns.
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae (alpha) — capsulated, lancet-shaped pairs causing pneumonia, ear infection and meningitis; NCERT class 12 names it as a cause of pneumonia, and Griffith used it in his transformation experiment.
  • Viridans streptococci (alpha) — normal mouth flora; S. mutans is linked with dental caries, and these species can infect damaged heart valves.

In the lab, the model supports the identification sequence: Gram stain, a negative catalase test, the haemolysis pattern, and disc tests such as bacitracin for group A and optochin for the pneumococcus.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between alpha- and beta-haemolysis?
Beta-haemolysis is complete breakdown of red cells, leaving a clear zone round the colony; alpha-haemolysis is partial, leaving a greenish zone.

Does the listing say which species the model shows?
No. Ask JLab for a description and photo with your quotation. The model is a teaching aid and gives no diagnostic or treatment guidance.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of microbiology lab equipment and disease teaching models, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The company makes this model in its own works, not through a trader, so colleges, institutes, dealers and importers order from the maker. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example the Dominican Republic in Central America and the Caribbean, Australia in Oceania, Austria in Western Europe, Cameroon in Central Africa and Mexico in North America.
