What Is the Meningioma Model Used For?
The brain and spinal cord are wrapped in three membranes, the dura mater, arachnoid mater and pia mater, together called the meninges. A meningioma arises from cells of the arachnoid layer. Most meningiomas are benign and slow-growing, and they cause problems mainly by pushing on the brain or spinal cord rather than by invading it; they are among the commoner tumours inside the skull in adults and occur more often in women. In a lecture the model helps students relate the layers of the meninges to the position of the tumour and to the symptoms that pressure can produce. It also complements normal brain models in a neuroanatomy teaching room. It is a teaching aid only and not a diagnostic device.
