What Is the Neisseria Model Used For?
Under the microscope, Neisseria appear as Gram-negative diplococci with their flat sides facing each other, like a pair of beans. They are aerobic and oxidase-positive, and the pathogenic species are fastidious: they are grown on enriched media such as chocolate agar, or selective media such as Thayer–Martin, in air with extra carbon dioxide. Several species live harmlessly in the throat, which makes the two pathogens all the more important to tell apart.
Neisseria meningitidis, the meningococcus, has a polysaccharide capsule and is carried in the nose and throat of some healthy people, spreading by respiratory droplets. It causes meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia, often with a characteristic rash. Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the gonococcus, causes gonorrhoea, one of the sexually transmitted infections listed in NCERT class 12 Reproductive Health, and can infect a newborn’s eyes during birth. In the laboratory the classic distinction is sugar use: the meningococcus forms acid from glucose and maltose, the gonococcus from glucose only.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are the meningococcus and gonococcus told apart?
By the disease and site of infection, and in the lab by carbohydrate use: N. meningitidis uses glucose and maltose, N. gonorrhoeae only glucose. The meningococcus also has a prominent capsule.
Which species and features does this model show?
The listing does not say. Ask JLab for a description and photo with your quotation. The model is a teaching aid only and gives no diagnostic or treatment guidance.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of microbiology lab equipment and medical teaching models in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. JLab builds this model at its own works rather than buying it from traders, so nursing and medical colleges, dealers and importers order from the manufacturer itself. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example South Korea in East Asia, Turkmenistan in Central Asia, South Africa in Southern Africa, Bangladesh in South Asia and Tonga in Oceania.
