What Is the Francisella Model Used For?
It covers a zoonosis that students rarely meet in other models. F. tularensis is a very small Gram-negative coccobacillus and one of the most infectious bacteria known — a handful of organisms can start an infection. It lives in rabbits, hares and rodents and reaches people through tick or deer-fly bites, handling infected carcasses, drinking contaminated water or breathing in contaminated dust; it does not normally pass from person to person. In the body it survives and multiplies inside macrophages, which carry it to lymph nodes and organs.
The form of tularaemia depends on the route of entry: ulceroglandular (a skin ulcer with swollen nearby lymph nodes, the commonest form), glandular, oculoglandular, oropharyngeal, pneumonic and typhoidal. Subspecies tularensis is the more virulent and subspecies holarctica the milder. The organism needs cysteine-enriched media and is a known hazard to laboratory staff, so cultures are handled under strict biosafety rules, while related species such as F. novicida serve as safer research models.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does “species and summary” cover?
The title points to an overview of the Francisella species and a summary of the disease. The parts and labels are not listed, so ask JLab for a description and photo before ordering.
Where do the names Francisella and tularensis come from?
The genus honours Edward Francis, an American public-health researcher who studied the disease; the species name comes from Tulare County, California, where the bacterium was first isolated.
Who manufactures this model?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), in its own works in Ambala, Haryana.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of biology lab equipment and microbiology teaching models in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. JLab makes this model itself rather than reselling a trader’s stock, so universities, veterinary and medical colleges, dealers and importers buy directly from the source. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Australia in Oceania, Guyana in South America, Turkmenistan in Central Asia, Madagascar in East Africa and Guatemala in Central America and the Caribbean.
