Hormones Mechanism of Action Model (code EL-BE-6089) is a biology teaching model on how hormones act on their target cells — the receptor, second-messenger and gene-switching routes covered under “mechanism of hormone action” in the class 11 chapter on chemical coordination and integration. It suits school and college endocrinology lessons. It is made by Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) at its works in Ambala, India.

What Is the Hormones Mechanism of Action Model Used For?

Hormones travel in the blood but affect only cells that carry a matching receptor. Protein and peptide hormones, and amines such as adrenaline, cannot pass through the cell membrane, so they bind to receptors on the cell surface. The hormone–receptor complex switches on a second messenger inside the cell, such as cyclic AMP, and a chain of enzyme reactions follows. Each step activates many molecules, so a small amount of hormone gives a large response: glucagon, for example, makes liver cells break down glycogen and release glucose.

Steroid hormones such as cortisol, oestrogen and testosterone, and the thyroid hormones, are fat-soluble and cross the membrane. They bind to receptors inside the cell, in the cytoplasm or nucleus, and the complex attaches to DNA and changes which genes are transcribed. Their effects start more slowly but last longer. A model lets students compare the two routes side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly does the model show?
The listing gives the subject only; the steps, labels, size and material are not listed. Ask JLab for a description and photograph before you order.

Why do steroid hormones act more slowly than adrenaline?
Adrenaline works through surface receptors and second messengers that change enzymes already in the cell, within seconds to minutes. Steroid hormones alter gene transcription, so new proteins have to be made before the effect appears.

OEM Manufacturer

Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, is a manufacturer of biology teaching models and laboratory equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The model is produced in JLab’s own works, not sourced from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers deal with the maker directly and repeat orders come from the same source. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Kazakhstan in Central Asia, Ivory Coast in West Africa, Libya in North Africa, Canada in North America and Thailand in Southeast Asia. Institutions buying by tender can see the JLab lab tenders page.
