What Is the Echinococcus Life Cycle Model Used For?

The adult worm is only a few millimetres long, with a scolex and just three or four segments, and lives in the small intestine of dogs and other canids. Eggs passed in dog faeces contaminate grass, soil and water. When a sheep, goat or cow — or a person in close contact with dogs — swallows them, each egg releases an oncosphere that crosses the intestinal wall and is carried in the blood, mostly to the liver and lungs.

There it grows slowly into a hydatid cyst: a fluid-filled bladder with an outer laminated layer and an inner germinal layer that buds off brood capsules full of protoscolices, the “hydatid sand”. The cycle closes when a dog eats raw offal containing cysts and each protoscolex becomes an adult worm. People are a dead end for the parasite, but cysts can press on organs, and a ruptured cyst can trigger a severe allergic reaction. Deworming dogs, not feeding them raw offal and washing hands break the cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which stages does the model show?
The listing does not describe the stages, labels or size. Ask JLab for a description and photo before ordering.

How is Echinococcus different from Taenia?
Both are tapeworms, but people carry the adult Taenia in the gut, while the adult Echinococcus lives in dogs and people only carry its larval cyst. The Echinococcus adult is also tiny compared with the metres-long Taenia.
