What Is the Guinea Worm Life Cycle Model Used For?

Guinea worm is the classic example of a parasite that uses a tiny crustacean as its intermediate host. When someone drinks unfiltered water from a pond or step-well, infected copepods of the genus Cyclops are digested in the stomach and release larvae. These cross the intestinal wall, mature in the body tissues and mate; the males then die, and over roughly a year the fertilised female, which can reach about a metre in length, migrates to the skin, most often of the lower leg or foot.

There she raises a burning blister. When the limb is put into water the blister bursts and the worm releases large numbers of first-stage larvae, which copepods eat; inside them the larvae become infective in about two weeks. The cycle explains why the disease is prevented by filtering or treating drinking water and by keeping people with emerging worms out of water sources — the measures by which India eliminated guinea worm disease and which have brought it close to global eradication.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it differ from the Life Cycle of Guinea Worm Model?
Both listings cover the same parasite, since guinea worm is the common name of Dracunculus medinensis, and neither describes its stages or size. Ask JLab for photos of both before choosing.

Is there a drug or vaccine for guinea worm?
No. The emerging worm is drawn out slowly by winding it around a small stick over days or weeks, which is why control relies on safe drinking water.

Who manufactures this model?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab, the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, makes biology, zoology and parasitology teaching models in India; the company was incorporated in 2017 and is based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. Production is in its own works, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy from the maker rather than a reseller. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Slovenia in Southern Europe, Brunei in Southeast Asia, Chad in Central Africa, Hong Kong in East Asia and New Zealand in Oceania.
