What Is the Blood and Tissue Protozoa Model Used For?
Most blood and tissue protozoa need an insect vector. Plasmodium, the malaria parasite, enters with the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito, multiplies first in liver cells and then invades red blood cells; the bursting of infected cells brings the recurring bouts of chills and fever. Leishmania donovani, spread by sandflies, lives inside macrophages of the spleen, liver and bone marrow and causes kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis). Trypanosoma brucei, carried by tsetse flies, causes African sleeping sickness, and Trypanosoma cruzi, carried by triatomine bugs, causes Chagas disease in the Americas.
Toxoplasma gondii has no insect vector: cats are its definitive host, and people are infected by swallowing oocysts from cat faeces or tissue cysts in undercooked meat. Infection is usually mild but matters in pregnancy and in people with weak immunity. In the laboratory, thick and thin blood films stained with Giemsa or Leishman stain are used to find malaria parasites, and Leishman–Donovan (LD) bodies are looked for in spleen or bone-marrow samples.
