What Is the Plasmodium Life Cycle Model Used For?
The Plasmodium cycle belongs to the human health and disease chapter of class 12 biology and is a standard topic in college zoology. An infected female Anopheles injects sporozoites with its saliva. They multiply in liver cells and are released as merozoites, which invade red blood cells and pass through ring, trophozoite and schizont stages. The red cells burst together, freeing more merozoites and the toxin haemozoin, which brings on the chills and high fever that return every few days.
Some merozoites develop instead into male and female gametocytes. Taken up by a feeding mosquito, they form gametes in its stomach; after fertilisation the zygote becomes a motile ookinete that settles in the stomach wall as an oocyst. Sporozoites formed inside the oocyst travel to the salivary glands, ready for the next bite. Because sexual reproduction happens in the mosquito, it is the definitive host and people are the intermediate host.
