What Is the Sit and Reach Box Used For?
The sit and reach test is a standard field test of how far a person can bend forward from the hips, which depends mainly on the flexibility of the lower back and the hamstrings at the back of the thighs. Schools use it in physical education fitness assessments, coaches use it to track athletes, and colleges use it in exercise physiology practicals, for example to compare results before and after a stretching programme.
After a short warm-up, the person sits on the floor with legs straight and the soles of both feet flat against the foot plate, places one hand over the other and reaches slowly forward along the top of the box, pushing the indicator ahead of the fingertips. Because the indicator stays at the furthest point, the tester can read the result after the person sits back, and the furthest of several attempts is usually recorded. The adjustable tension lets you set the indicator so it slides smoothly but does not overrun. Wipe the steel box after use and store it dry.
