Decomposed Body of Man Model (code EL-BE-5827) is a forensic medicine teaching model of a man’s body in a state of decomposition. It is made by Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) at its works in Ambala, India.

What Is the Decomposed Body Model Used For?

Putrefaction is the breakdown of the body by bacteria, largely from the bowel, together with the body’s own enzymes. The first outward sign is usually a greenish discolouration of the skin over the right lower abdomen. It is followed by marbling, a branching greenish-purple pattern of the surface veins; gas bloating of the face and abdomen with protruding eyes and tongue; skin slippage and blisters; purge fluid from the mouth and nose; and loosening of the hair and nails.

Students learn that the pace of these changes depends on temperature, humidity, body build, cause of death and surroundings — decomposition is fastest in air, slower in water and slowest after burial, the principle known as Casper’s dictum — and that later changes such as adipocere or mummification can follow. They also learn the classic pitfalls: bloating can be mistaken for obesity, purge fluid for bleeding and skin slippage for burns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the model help students estimate?
An approximate time since death, by matching the stage of putrefaction with the conditions the body was in. Exact timing is never possible from decomposition alone.

Why teach decomposition with a model?
Real decomposed remains are rarely available for teaching and are distressing for many students; a model lets every group examine the signs repeatedly and safely.

Who manufactures the model?
JLab, the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of teaching models and biology lab equipment, incorporated in 2017 with its works on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The decomposition model is made there, not bought in from a trader, so medical and forensic institutions, dealers and importers buy from the maker, and each unit is inspected before dispatch. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Mexico in North America, Afghanistan in South Asia, South Korea in East Asia, Barbados in Central America and the Caribbean, and Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia. Tender details are on the JLab lab tenders page.
