What Is the Post Mortem Staining Model Used For?
When the circulation stops, blood drains under gravity into the vessels of the lowest parts of the body and shows through the skin as a bluish-purple discolouration. Where the body presses on a surface the vessels are squeezed shut, so those areas stay pale and may carry the pattern of clothing or of the surface beneath. Staining appears within hours of death and becomes fixed some hours later; until then it shifts if the body is turned, so fixed staining on parts that were not lowest suggests the body was moved after death.
The colour can also give clues: cherry-pink staining is classically linked with carbon monoxide poisoning, chocolate-brown with poisons that form methaemoglobin, and a pink tint with bodies kept cold. Forensic medicine classes use the model to practise describing these features and to compare staining with real injuries.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is post-mortem staining told apart from a bruise?
Staining lies in the lowest parts, has no swelling, and the blood stays inside the vessels, so on cutting it can be washed away. In a bruise the blood has escaped into the tissues and cannot be washed off.
What can staining reveal about a death?
The position of the body after death, whether it was moved once staining had fixed, a rough indication of the time since death and, sometimes, a hint of poisoning from its colour.
Who manufactures this model?
JLab — Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd — at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of human body part models and biology lab equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The staining model comes from its own works rather than a trader, so medical colleges, dealers and importers buy from the manufacturer, and each unit is inspected before dispatch. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Afghanistan in South Asia, Japan in East Asia, Tanzania in East Africa, Fiji in Oceania and Lithuania in Northern Europe. Tender details are on the JLab lab tenders page.
