What Is the Leishmania Life Cycle Model Used For?
The parasite has two forms. In the sand fly it is a promastigote, a slender cell with a flagellum at the front; in people it is an amastigote, a small oval body with no external flagellum, also called the Leishman–Donovan (LD) body after the two doctors who described it. When an infected female sand fly bites, it injects promastigotes into the skin, where macrophages engulf them.
Inside the macrophage the parasite becomes an amastigote and divides by binary fission until the cell bursts and fresh macrophages are infected, mainly in the spleen, liver and bone marrow. This explains the long fever, enlarged spleen and liver, anaemia and weight loss of kala-azar. A sand fly feeding on an infected person takes up amastigotes, which turn into promastigotes in its gut, multiply and move forward to the mouthparts, ready for the next bite.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which stages does the model show?
The listing does not say. Ask JLab for a description and photo, and check that both hosts and both parasite forms are shown if your course needs them.
What does kala-azar mean?
It means “black fever”, a name linked to the greyish darkening of the skin seen in some patients. In India the disease has mainly affected Bihar and neighbouring states.
How are LD bodies seen in the laboratory?
In stained smears of spleen, bone marrow or lymph node aspirates, as small oval bodies inside macrophages, each with a nucleus and a rod-shaped kinetoplast.
