What Is the Gall Stone Model Used For?
The liver makes bile, and the gall bladder stores and concentrates it before releasing it into the duodenum to help digest fats. When bile carries too much cholesterol or bilirubin, or the gall bladder does not empty well, crystals form and grow into stones — cholesterol, pigment or mixed. Many gallstones cause no symptoms. When a stone blocks the outlet, it produces biliary colic, a severe pain in the upper right abdomen that often follows a fatty meal, and it can lead to an inflamed gall bladder, jaundice if a stone lodges in the common bile duct, or pancreatitis.
Gallstones are more common in women and become more frequent with age, obesity and rapid weight loss. They are usually found on ultrasound, and troublesome stones are generally treated by removing the gall bladder.
