What Is the Hepatitis B Course Model Used For?
Hepatitis B is caused by a small, enveloped DNA virus of the Hepadnaviridae family that spreads through blood, sexual contact and from mother to baby at birth. Its course is usually taught as a timeline of blood markers. In acute infection the surface antigen, HBsAg, appears first, followed by HBeAg, a sign of active virus replication; IgM antibody to the core antigen (anti-HBc) rises as liver enzymes climb and symptoms such as jaundice may appear.
Most infected adults clear the virus: HBsAg disappears, antibody to it (anti-HBs) appears and gives lasting immunity, and IgG anti-HBc stays as a marker of past infection. If HBsAg persists for more than six months the infection is chronic — far more likely when it is caught at birth or in early childhood — and over years it can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. The model helps students read these patterns, which underpin hepatitis B testing and vaccination teaching.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which markers and phases does the model show?
The listing does not say. Ask JLab for a description and photo of the curves, phases and labels before ordering.
What is the window period in hepatitis B?
It is the gap during recovery when HBsAg has gone but anti-HBs is not yet detectable; IgM anti-HBc may then be the only marker of recent infection.
Who manufactures this model?
