What Is the Hepatitis Virus Classification Model Used For?
Five hepatitis viruses, named A to E, are usually taught, and they belong to quite different families. Hepatitis A virus is a small non-enveloped RNA virus of the picornavirus family; hepatitis E virus, also non-enveloped and RNA-based, sits in its own family, Hepeviridae. Both spread by the faecal–oral route, through contaminated water and food, and cause acute illness that does not become chronic in healthy people.
Hepatitis B virus is the only DNA virus of the group, an enveloped hepadnavirus. Hepatitis C virus is an enveloped RNA virus of the flavivirus family, and hepatitis D (delta) virus is a defective RNA virus that can multiply only in a person who also carries hepatitis B, borrowing its surface antigen as a coat. B, C and D spread through blood and body fluids and can cause chronic infection, cirrhosis and liver cancer. Grouping the viruses this way helps students connect structure, spread, prevention and vaccines.
