What Is Dialysis Membrane Tubing Used For?
Dialysis tubing lets water and small molecules such as glucose, salts and iodine pass through its pores while holding back large molecules such as starch and proteins. That makes it the usual membrane for an osmosis experiment in school and college biology. A length tied at one end and filled with a starch-and-glucose mixture is placed in water containing iodine solution, and students test which substances cross the membrane — a simple model of digestion and absorption in the gut. Filled with a sugar solution and placed in water, the bag gains mass by osmosis.
In research and teaching laboratories the same tubing is used to dialyse protein or enzyme solutions, removing salts and other small solutes against a large volume of buffer. To use it, cut the length you need, soak it in distilled water until it softens and opens, close one end with a firm knot or a clip, fill it, close the other end and rinse the outside before placing it in the bath. Handle it with clean or gloved hands.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Flat width — the listing shows “1” without a unit, so state the width you need.
- Molecular-weight cut-off — if you are dialysing proteins, give the cut-off your method requires.
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units.
Frequently Asked Questions
What molecular-weight cut-off does it have?
The listing does not say. For starch, glucose and iodine experiments the difference in molecule size is large; for protein work, ask JLab to confirm the cut-off first.
Does the tubing need preparing before use?
Yes. Soak the dry tubing in water until it is soft and opens easily, then tie or clip the ends, and keep it wet once soaked.
Who manufactures this tubing?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a biology and laboratory equipment manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The tubing comes from its own works, so schools, colleges, laboratories and dealers buy direct from the maker. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Trinidad and Tobago in Central America and the Caribbean, Ghana in West Africa, Algeria in North Africa, North Macedonia in Southern Europe and the USA in North America.
Osmosis and Diffusion Teaching Aids
- Osmosis and Diffusion Lab — a class activity on a solute crossing a semi-permeable membrane.
- Osmosis and Diffusion Kit — for observing the selective permeability of a membrane.
- Visualizing Osmosis and Diffusion — selective permeability shown with coloured solutions.
- Iodine Sol — for the starch test in membrane experiments.
