Unit Membrane Model

Product Code : EL-BE-5886
Jlab Export is a leading Unit Membrane Model Manufacturer, and suppliers in India

Unit Membrane Model (code EL-BE-5886) is a biology teaching model of the unit membrane — the idea that every cell membrane, from the plasma membrane to the membranes around organelles, shares one basic layered structure. It helps explain the dark–light–dark pattern that membranes show in electron micrographs, in class 11 and college cell biology. It is made by Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) at its works in Ambala, India.

What Is the Unit Membrane Model Used For?

When cell membranes were first examined under the electron microscope, each appeared as two dark lines separated by a paler band, often described as a railway track. J. D. Robertson proposed that this trilaminar pattern is common to all membranes and called it the unit membrane. Building on the earlier Danielli–Davson sandwich, he read the dark lines as protein layers coating the polar heads of a lipid bilayer, with the pale band formed by the lipid tails. The same pattern is seen in the nuclear envelope, endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria.

The unit membrane was later replaced by the fluid mosaic model of Singer and Nicolson, in which proteins sit within or span the bilayer and can move sideways instead of forming continuous sheets. Teachers use this model to show how membrane ideas developed and why the electron-microscope image still looks layered: stains such as osmium mark the polar head groups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the unit membrane idea still accepted?
Only in part. The layered appearance is real, but the continuous protein coats it assumed are not; the fluid mosaic model now describes membrane structure, so the unit membrane is taught as a step in that history.

What exactly does the model show?
The listing names only the subject. Ask JLab for a description and photograph with the quotation to confirm the layers, labels, size and material.

What are the minimum order and dispatch time?
The minimum is 10 units, supplied individually after a visual inspection; dispatch is usually 7–10 working days, plus export transit time.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of biology models and laboratory equipment, incorporated in 2017 with its works on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The unit membrane model is built there rather than bought in, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers order straight from the maker and can repeat the order from the same source. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example South Africa in Southern Africa, Malaysia in Southeast Asia, Mongolia in East Asia, Cameroon in Central Africa and Sierra Leone in West Africa. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
