What Is the Microslide Aids Set Used For?

The set lets a whole class look at what HIV does to the immune system without a microscope or prepared slides. Students compare a healthy T-cell with HIV particles attached to a T-cell and with new virus budding from one, view a macrophage at work, and see a simian virus by electron microscopy (E.M. stands for electron micrograph and S.E.M. for scanning electron micrograph). The last three images show Candida albicans, Pneumocystis carinii and Kaposi’s sarcoma — opportunistic infections and a cancer that take hold when the immune system is weakened, which is why they are associated with AIDS. The Kaposi’s sarcoma image is shown at actual size (1x), while the other seven are magnified between 710x and 87,500x.

It supports the class 12 biology chapter on human health and disease, where HIV, helper T-cells, macrophages and the progress to AIDS are described, as well as college microbiology and immunology classes and health education programmes. The arrows and callouts guide students to the key features, and the text folder supplies notes and questions for discussion or homework; afterwards the Microslide goes back into the folder’s pocket for storage.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Number of sets — the minimum order is 10 units; many schools plan one set per viewer so groups can work in parallel.
  • Viewers — add Microslide viewers to the enquiry if you do not already have them, since the listing does not state that a viewer is included.
  • Related topics — the immunity and human diseases Microslide sets below cover the same unit from other angles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which images are in the set?
Eight: a simian virus (E.M., 87,500x), a macrophage at work (1,000x), HIV on a T-cell (S.E.M., 6,000x), HIV budding from a T-cell (S.E.M., 50,000x), a healthy T-cell (S.E.M., 3,500x), Candida albicans (S.E.M., 3,000x), Pneumocystis carinii (S.E.M., 710x) and Kaposi’s sarcoma (1x).

Is a viewer included?
The listing does not say so. The Microslide is viewed through a Microslide viewer, which is listed separately and can be added to the same enquiry.

What comes with the images?
A detailed text folder designed to inform and question students about the topic, with a pocket that stores the Microslide. Arrows and callouts on the images point out the important features.

Why are Candida, Pneumocystis and Kaposi’s sarcoma included?
They are conditions that develop when HIV has weakened the immune system, so they show students the consequences of AIDS rather than the virus alone.
