What Is the Nutrition Microslide Used For?
Deficiency diseases are usually taught as a table of names; this set shows the tissue behind each one. Lack of vitamin A dries and damages the cornea (xerophthalmia) and leads to poor night vision. Thiamine (B1) deficiency causes beriberi, which can affect the heart muscle as well as the nerves; riboflavin (B2) shortage shows in the skin and lips; and niacin (B3) deficiency causes pellagra, with its typical skin changes. Too little vitamin D leaves bones soft, giving rickets in children. Iron deficiency produces anaemia, with fewer and paler red blood cells; iodine deficiency enlarges the thyroid into a goitre; and low potassium disturbs the working of heart muscle.
