What Is the Basic Fossil Set Used For?
The set gives students real fossils to handle while they learn how living things are preserved in rock. Most of the samples are marine animals: brachiopods and bivalves both have two shells, but a bivalve’s shells mirror each other while each brachiopod shell is symmetrical down its own middle — a comparison students can check by eye. Ammonites are extinct coiled-shell relatives of squid and octopus and are widely used to date rocks; echinoids are sea urchins, crinoids are sea lilies related to starfish, gastropods are snails, and sponges are among the simplest animals. Nummulites were large single-celled organisms with coin-shaped shells. A shark’s skeleton is cartilage, so its teeth are what usually fossilises, and the bone bed sample comes from a rock layer rich in bone fragments.
The two fossil wood samples show different kinds of preservation: in the silica sample the wood has been replaced by mineral, while the carbonized sample has been reduced to carbon. Because each specimen is numbered and listed inside the lid, a class can work through an identification sheet and check answers against the list. The set suits fossils, evolution and earth-history topics in middle and secondary school and introductory college geology.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which fossils are in the Basic Fossil Set?
A brachiopod, an ammonite, fossil wood (silica), an echinoid, a nummulite, a bivalve, a bone bed sample, a gastropod, fossil wood (carbonized), a crinoid, a shark tooth and a sponge.
How are the specimens identified?
Each specimen is numbered, and the contents are listed inside the lid, so students can match every fossil to its name.
Are these real fossils or replicas?
The listing describes them as samples of fossils and does not call them replicas. If your course needs this confirmed in writing, ask JLab when you request a quotation.
How does it differ from the Advanced Fossil Collection?
This is the smaller introductory set. The Advanced Fossil Collection is a larger demonstration collection of animal and plant fossils from the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras.
What is the minimum order and dispatch time?
The minimum order is 10 units, each a complete set. Orders are usually dispatched within 7–10 working days after each set has been visually inspected; export transit time depends on the destination.
