What Is a Cork Borer Sharpener Used For?
Cork borers are thin brass tubes with a bevelled cutting edge, used to cut holes in corks and rubber stoppers so that glass tubing, thermometers or delivery tubes can pass through them in gas-preparation, distillation and other chemistry and biology set-ups. With use the edge dulls or gets nicked; a blunt borer tears the stopper, needs more force and is more likely to slip and cut the hand holding the stopper. The sharpener restores the edge so holes come out clean and round again.
To use it, slide the borer over the brass cone, which supports the edge from the inside, then press the hinged steel blade against the outside bevel and turn the borer a few times with light pressure until a fresh, even edge forms. Because the cone tapers, the same tool fits every borer in a set, small or wide. Wipe brass and rubber shavings off the blade after use and keep the sharpener in a drawer with the borer set so the blade is protected.
