Reading a Spectrum with the Grating Equation
Light of wavelength λ passing a grating of line spacing d forms bright orders at angles θ given by d sin θ = nλ, where n is the order number. The spacing is the reciprocal of the line density: 10 µm for 100 lines per mm, about 3.3 µm for 300 and about 1.7 µm for 600. The finer the grating, the wider each order is spread from the centre and the fewer orders appear, so the 600 lines per mm section gives the broadest first-order spectrum while the 100 lines per mm section shows many orders close together. With θ measured on a spectrometer for a known order, λ = d sin θ / n.
Handling the Glass Mount
Hold the grating by its edges so fingerprints stay off the viewing areas, and set the lines parallel to the slit of the light source or spectrometer.
