What Is the Digestive Canal Model Used For?
The digestive (alimentary) canal runs from the mouth through the oesophagus, stomach and small and large intestines to the anus. Its wall is taught as four layers: the mucosa, the inner lining, which in the small intestine is folded into finger-like villi that enlarge the surface for absorption; the submucosa, carrying blood vessels and nerves; the muscularis, whose circular and longitudinal muscles push food along by peristalsis; and the outer serosa. A structural model gives students something solid to point at while they learn these layers.
