What Is The Digestive System Human Microslide Used For?
The images can be taken in the order food meets them. Taste buds on the tongue detect what we eat, and the salivary gland makes saliva, whose enzyme starts the digestion of starch in the mouth. The gullet carries food down to the stomach by peristalsis — waves of contraction in the smooth muscle of the gut wall, which has its own image — and the junction of the gullet and stomach shows where one lining gives way to the other. In the stomach lining, gastric glands release hydrochloric acid, the protein-digesting enzyme pepsin and protective mucus. Finally, the small intestine, its glands and its villi show where digestion is completed and how the folded, finger-like surface of the villi gives a large area for absorbing digested food.
The set suits the human digestive system in class 7 science and nutrition in human beings under Life Processes in class 10 science, and it gives college biology and nursing students a compact revision of gut histology. With a Microslide Viewer each student sees the same labelled tissue, the arrows and callouts point to the structures named in the lesson, and the questions in the text folder can be set as classwork or homework.

Frequently Asked Questions
What images are in The Digestive System Human Microslide?
Eight: the gullet (oesophagus), smooth muscle, the small intestine, the junction of the gullet and stomach, a salivary gland, taste buds, the stomach lining with gastric glands, and intestinal glands with villi.
Why are the villi important?
Villi are tiny finger-like projections of the small intestine lining. They give a very large surface through which digested food is absorbed into the blood, and the image here shows them together with the intestinal glands.
Do I need a separate viewer?
Yes. Microslides are made to be viewed through a Microslide Viewer, which JLab lists as its own item; include viewers in your enquiry if your lab does not have them.
