What Is the Double Gel Electrophoresis Apparatus Used For?
Agarose gel electrophoresis separates DNA fragments by size. The gel sits under buffer between the two electrodes, and when a voltage is applied the negatively charged DNA moves towards the positive electrode, with smaller fragments travelling further through the gel. Because this horizontal gel electrophoresis unit holds two gels, two student groups can run their samples together, or one group can run a sample set and a repeat side by side, which halves the number of runs needed in a practical period. It suits class 12 biotechnology practicals on gel electrophoresis and DNA fingerprinting principles, and undergraduate genetics and molecular biology labs.
To cast a gel, pour melted agarose straight into a casting tray — the trays hold it without tape or snap-on ends — and place a comb at the end of the tray for a standard run, or in the centre so that molecules with opposite charges, such as two different dyes, can move apart in both directions. When the gel has set, remove the comb, place the tray in the chamber, cover it with running buffer, load the wells and lock the lid before connecting the patch cords to the power supply. After the run, switch off the power before opening the lid, rinse the chamber and trays with distilled water and let them dry; keep abrasive cleaners and organic solvents away from the acrylic.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units; one apparatus serves two gels per run.
- Power supply — this listing has no power supply, so add the Electrophoresis Power Supply or choose the Electrophoresis Lab Station I package.
- Extra trays or combs — two trays and six 12-well combs come with each chamber; ask in your enquiry if you want more.
- Destination — the delivery city or port, and any packing or labelling needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many gels can this apparatus run at once?
Two. It is supplied with two casting trays and six 12-well forming combs, so both gels can be cast and loaded for the same run.
Is a power supply included?
No, it is not part of this listing. JLab lists an Electrophoresis Power Supply separately, and the Electrophoresis Lab Station I combines a double-gel chamber with a variable voltage power supply.
Do the casting trays need tape to hold the agarose?
No. The trays are designed to hold melted agarose without tape or snap-on ends, which saves time when a class is casting several gels.
Can the wells be placed in the middle of the gel?
Yes. Wells can be formed at the end or at the centre of the gel; centre wells are useful when samples are expected to move towards both electrodes.
What safety feature does the chamber have?
Built-in safety features prevent the chamber from being used unless the lid is locked in place. Always switch the power supply off before opening the lid.
How does it differ from the Electrophoresis Lab Station I?
The Lab Station I is a starter package listed with a double-gel chamber, a variable voltage power supply, a lab investigation, a CD-ROM and a fixed-volume micropipette. This listing covers the chamber with its trays, combs and patch cords only.
What is the minimum order and dispatch lead time?
The minimum order is 10 units. Orders are usually dispatched within 7–10 working days, every apparatus is visually inspected before packing, and export transit time depends on the destination and shipping method.
Who manufactures this electrophoresis apparatus?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it as the manufacturer.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of biology and biotechnology teaching equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The double gel apparatus is built at JLab’s own works rather than bought in from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy direct from the maker, each unit is checked visually before dispatch, and repeat orders and spare parts are dealt with by the manufacturer. The company is registered as a manufacturing enterprise under MSME Udyam registration UDYAM-HR-01-0003849 and holds Importer-Exporter Code 3317504552. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Bhutan in South Asia, DR Congo in Central Africa, Nigeria in West Africa, Morocco in North Africa and Hong Kong in East Asia. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
Power Supply and Electrophoresis Activities
- Electrophoresis Power Supply — three sets of output connectors, so up to three chambers can run at the same time.
- Electrophoresis Lab Station I — a complete starter system for introductory agarose gel electrophoresis.
- Diagnosing Gene Defects — a classroom agarose gel activity on the sickle-cell mutation, using non-human DNA.
