What Is the Human Ear Chart Used For?
The ear has three parts. The outer ear — the pinna and the auditory canal — collects sound and leads it to the eardrum, or tympanic membrane, which vibrates. In the air-filled middle ear, three tiny bones, the malleus (hammer), incus (anvil) and stapes (stirrup), pass these vibrations on and increase their force; the stapes is the smallest bone in the body, and the Eustachian tube links the middle ear to the throat to keep the air pressure equal on both sides of the eardrum. In the fluid-filled inner ear, hair cells in the coiled cochlea turn the vibrations into nerve impulses that the auditory nerve carries to the brain, while the semicircular canals and vestibule sense the position and movement of the head.
