What Is the Human Eye Chart Used For?

Light enters the eye through the transparent cornea, which does most of the bending of the light. The coloured iris adjusts the size of the pupil to control how much light gets in, and the convex lens, whose shape is changed by the ciliary muscles, fine-tunes the focus for near and distant objects — a process called accommodation. The image falls, upside down, on the retina, where rods respond to dim light and cones to colour, and the optic nerve carries the signals to the brain; where the nerve leaves the eye there are no receptors, which gives the blind spot. The tough white sclera, the dark choroid and the aqueous and vitreous humours complete the structure.

The same diagram serves physics lessons: in short sight (myopia) the image forms in front of the retina and a concave lens corrects it, in long sight (hypermetropia) it forms behind the retina and a convex lens is used, and presbyopia develops with age. The chart fits class 10 science lessons on the human eye and the colourful world as well as biology and introductory optometry or nursing courses as a general reference.
