What Is Original Krypto Used For?
Krypto turns mental arithmetic into a race. The objective card sets the target, and each player tries to reach it with the five cards in hand, using every card once and only once and any mix of the four operations. With 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 in hand and 11 as the objective, for example, one answer is (7 − 6) × 9 − 8 + 10 = 11. The first player to use all five cards to match the objective declares “Krypto”. To get there, players hold part-results in their heads, try the operations in different orders and check their own working, which practises number facts, the order of operations and flexible thinking.
In schools the game fits maths clubs, enrichment periods and short end-of-lesson practice in the upper primary and middle-school years, and the score pad keeps a running record over several rounds.
